INDEPENDENT OPERATIONS

  While you are in America's Finest City you can keep yourself as busy as you
want. The 2009 Convention has decided to support "Independent Ops" for all
attendees. We will have a HELP DESK set up near the registration desks to
to help individuals or small groups get out and visit the many things to see
in the city and the area.

Check back as we continue to update this site with more San Diego

SAN DIEGO ZOO
 
  The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, San Diego, California is one of the largest,
most progressive zoos in the world with over 4,000 animals of more than 800
species. It is privately operated by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San
Diego on 100 acres (0.40 km²) of parkland leased from the City of San Diego,
and ownership of all animals, equipment and other assets rests with the City
of San Diego.

 

 
BALBOA PARK

 
  Enjoy Balboa Park - a special place where you can experience San Diego's
natural beauty, wonderful art and culture and stunning Spanish Revival
architecture. There are so many things to do and see in the Park, including
a visit to the folowing museums:

 
  Centro Cultural de la Raza - A multidisciplinary cultural arts center dedicated to
creating, promoting, preserving and educating about Chicano, Mexican,
Indigenous and Latino art and culture. Features rotating exhibits and
performances with theater, dance, music, and film/video.

Japanese Friendship Garden - The Garden originated as a teahouse during the
1915–16 Panama-California Exposition and now lies on two acres near the
Spreckels Organ Pavilion. Along the Garden’s winding paths are a Zen garden for
meditation, an exhibit house, koi pond, bonsai exhibit, ceremonial gate, and a
Fujidana (wisteria arbor).

Museum of Photographic Arts - One of the few institutions in the country devoted
to the photographic arts, the Museum of Photographic Arts houses more than 4,000
works, representing the entire history of photography, its aesthetic movements,
and technological advancements.

Museum of San Diego History - The museum showcases the region's unique,
colorful, and diverse history exhibiting artifacts, costumes, textiles, art,
and photographs detailing life and development of the local area.

Reuben H. Fleet Science Center - The Fleet is home to Southern California’s only
IMAX® Dome Theater and 100+ hands-on science exhibits for all ages. Watch
immersive giant-screen films and amazing planetarium shows on the IMAX Dome
and experience seven galleries of fun, interactive exhibits. A 23-passenger
motion simulator ride thrills visitors with journeys into exciting realms.

San Diego Air & Space Museum - The Air & Space Museum covers five centuries
of aviation history, demonstrating the remarkable progress of manned flight with
more than 60 aircraft and space vehicles on display.

Enjoy The Planetary Theater, as visitor step through the portals of space to
discover Mother Earth and the solar system. The exclusive exhibit, Apollo 9 Has
Landed
, features the only Apollo Command Module flown in space west of the
Rockies. The San Diego Air & Space Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate is also
California’s official Air & Space Museum and Education Center.

San Diego Automotive Museum - A nostalgic look at the icon of the 20th-century
features more than 80 historic autos and motorcycles. Includes Frank Sinatra’s
1967 Austin Petrol Hire Car and Louie Mattar’s Fabulous $75,000 Car. Special
exhibitions every two or three months display other fine vehicles and famous
autos.

San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum - The nation's largest multi-sport
museum boasts memorabilia reflecting San Diego's sporting legacy. Visitors can
call play-by-play for Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams in the state-of-the-art media
center, follow the evolution of the surfboard, or soar with skateboard legend
Tony Hawk. More than an archive of San Diego sports, this 70,000-square-foot
facility on three levels is a center that encourages visitors to be participants
as well as observers.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum - At 28,000 square feet, the museum is the
world's largest operating model railroad museum. This unique museum contains
four enormous scale and model layouts, built by separate clubs, which depict
railroads of the Southwest in O, HO, and N scales. In addition, the San Diego
Model Railroad Museum features a Toy Train Gallery with an interactive Lionel
layout for children and state-of-the-art theater lighting.

San Diego Museum of Art - As the region's oldest and largest art museum, the
San Diego Museum of Art's renowned holdings include a fine selection of European
old masters, 19th and 20th century American art, an encyclopedic Asian collection,
and growing collections of contemporary and Latin American art.

San Diego Museum of man - Located beneath the ornate 200-foot California Tower,
the San Diego Museum of Man is the city’s only museum devoted to anthropology.
With its Spanish colonial and mission style architecture, the landmark building was
originally constructed for the 1915–16 Panama-California Exposition. Today, a key
focus of the museum is to create and display dynamic and educational
anthropological exhibits about people and places throughout the Americas and
around the world.

San Diego Natural History Museum - Founded by a handful of citizen-naturalists in
1874, the museum is an active research institution and is the second oldest
scientific institution in Southern California.

  SeaWorld San Diego is one of the world's premier marine adventure parks with

MARITIME MUSEUM OF SAN DIEGO
 
  The exhibit of historic ships at the Maritime Museum include:

 
  The Star of India - the world's oldest active ship. Her keel was laid in 1863 as a full-
rigged ship, but in 1901 the Alaska Packers Association rigged her down to a
barque, which is her present rig.

The Berkeley - an 1898 steam ferryboat that operated for 60 years on San Francisco
Bay.

The Californian - built in 1984 at Spanish Landing in San Diego Bay, she was
launched in time for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In July 2003 she
was designated as the official tall ship of the State of California, the only ship to
hold this title.

The Medea - a steam yacht built for William Macalister Hall of Torrisdale Castle,
Scotland in 1904.

The Pilot - launched on August 7, 1914 she served as San Diego Bay's official pilot
boat for commercial ships entering and leaving the harbor.

The HMS Surprise - launched in 1970 she is a 179-foot full rigged ship and she was
used in the academy award winning film "Master and Commander: The Far Side of
the World."

Soviet B-39 Submarine - one of a fleet of diesel electric boats the Soviets called
Project 641. B-39 was commissioned in the early 1970s and served on active duty
for more than 20 years.

 

 
MIDWAY MUSEUM
